Motahar Akand of ASK Bangladesh, the author of New Tactics’ latest tactical notebook "Action Theatre: Initiating Changes," helped to found one of these innovative campaigns. Crossing the line between actors and audience, ASK uses issue based theatre to address social issues. Members of the community form theatre groups that are involved throughout the process, selecting an issue to confront, participating in drama training, and taking action to address the issues raised during post-performance discussions.
At ASK Bangladesh, action takes on two meanings. First, it implies that audiences are not passive, simply watching professional actors, but, instead, they are actively responding to the material and participating in post-performance discussions. Second, it speaks to the broader goals of the project–initiating change in the community.
