Call for Submissions, AWID’s “Resisting and Challenging Religious Fundamentalisms” - Due June 13, 2008

The Association for Women's Rights in Development is asking for case studies dealing with
issues surrounding the need to share strategic information on how regressive politico-
religious groups and movements work and grow and affect women’s rights, and how we can
launch successful strategies to resist, challenge and present viable alternatives in return.

As part of it’s initiative on “Resisting and Challenging Religious Fundamentalisms” AWID
is gathering insights into the contemporary workings of religious fundamentalist movements
and previously undocumented strategies employed by women’s rights activists to successfully
challenge them. They intend to share the selected case studies with AWID members and other
women’s rights activists and advocates around the world.

Selected proposals will receive an honorarium of $3000 USD upon completion of the full
case study in order to assist in and offset costs of documentation (expected length of the
full case study will be 15 to 20 pages long). Selected contributions will also be
highlighted at the 11th International AWID Forum on “The Power of Movements” which will be
held on 14th-17th November, 2008, in Cape Town, South Africa. The authors of the selected
case studies will be invited to present their experiences in a session at the AWID Forum
and the case studies will also subsequently be published by AWID.

For more information, visit www.awid.org/go.php?pg=challenge_fundamentalisms

East Asia Institute Fellows Program on Peace, Governance, and Dev't (Korea) - Deadline: May 31, 2008

The East Asia Institute (EAI), based in Seoul, Korea, is a private nonprofit and nonpartisan organization devoted to research, publication, education, and international exchange in the realms of foreign policy, institutional reform, electoral politics, and public opinion in East Asia. The EAI strives to transform East Asia into a society of nations based on political pluralism, economic interdependence, and international peace. To this end, it strives to propagate the values of diversity, tolerance, accountability, and transparency.

The “Fellows Program on Peace, Governance, and Development in East Asia” was established in 2005 by EAI, as an international exchange program for scholars with expertise in peace, governance, and development in East Asia. Funded by the Henry Luce Foundation of New York, the East Asia Foundation of Seoul, and the Chang Ching-Kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange of Taipei, it invites established and next-generation East Asianists of the United States to give seminars and lectures based on unpublished articles submitted exclusively for the Fellows Program during their visit of three weeks to two or more institutions of higher education in East Asia. The EAI welcomes seminars and lectures based on interdisciplinary articles on current issues with comparative perspectives to transcend country case studies into genuinely regional East Asian studies. By providing its Fellows with opportunities to interact with East Asia’s leading scholars and major institutions through seminars and lectures, the EAI endeavors to develop a dense transnational epistemic community of East Asianists across the Pacific.
Request for Proposals: Promoting the Freedom of Expression and the Free Flow of Information Through Technology, May 2, 2008

The Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (DRL) announces a Request for Proposals from organizations interested in submitting proposals to support technologies that will maximize freedom of expression and the free flow of information and ideas through minimizing the success of repressive technologies in censoring and silencing peaceful expressions of political, religious, and ideological views on the Internet. These technologies should be either Internet-based technologies that can directly counter Internet censorship tools, or mobile technologies that circumvent Internet censorship by disseminating information through other media. Proposed activities should promote Internet freedom in restricted environments, including the Middle East and Asia.

Dialogue for Peaceful Change Training May 4-9, Register by April 14

Dialogue for Peaceful Change (DPC) is a methodology used globally, that creates a setting and provides a pathway for overcoming division. DPC is not the goal but the instrument in a process which seeks to build the creative and practical skills of peaceful change. It’s about facilitating the road to solutions found and agreed by the people caught in negative conflict patterns.

DPC can be used in both micro and macro conflict settings. Conflicts differ in scale and contexts, with similar patterns.

DPC facilitators learn to analyze a conflict situation and know when meditation is applicable. DPC skills can also be applied in situations where formal mediation is not appropriate or possible.

DPC is an efficiency tool for any work place. It can prevent conflict and gives tools to overcome division.

DPC empowers community members in their communication with each other and with agencies, government, etc.

In this intensive five-day training, we will look at why conflicts resurface time and time again and learn the specific steps needed to bring both parties to a place of transformation - so that they can live and work without violence. The DPC approach fully recognizes that conflicts in today’s global community frequently include tensions that have an inter-religious and inter-cultural basis. Trainers from Northern Ireland (who helped create the process) and from the U.S. will guide your development.

The fee for Dialogue for Peaceful Change is $395 per person. This includes all materials, 5 nights double-occupancy lodging, all meals and snacks. Some partial scholarships are available. Because of the nature of Dialogue for Peaceful Change it is important that everyone stay on campus during the entire event. No commuters.
