MISA Press Freedom Award - Deadline: August 12, 2008

The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Press Freedom Award is co-sponsored in conjunction with the Southern Africa Trust. The award, with a cash prize of US$2,500, is given to honour excellence in journalism, described as the upholding of ethics of the profession at all costs and the relentless pursuit of the truth behind the bare facts. The award is also in recognition of the work of an individual or institution where this is considered to have made a significant contribution to the promotion of media freedom in the region. The excellence which the award acknowledges can be achieved either through reportage or in other ways such as media reform, lobbying or training. The Award is open to all forms of media such as photography, print, video, internet, or media associations and institutions. Cape Town Transitional Justice Fellowship Program - Applications due August 15, 2008

The Cape Town Transitional Justice Fellowship Program is an intensive 3-week transitional justice course offered by the International Center for Tranistional Justice (October 20 - November 8, 2008). The course is taught by senior staff from the ICTJ as well as a number of renowned visiting lecturers, such as Professor Andre du Toit and former Truth and Reconciliation Commissioner Yasmin Sooka.

Participants must be senior-level professionals with a demonstrated commitment to ensuring that their society deals with the past in a just and responsible manner.

Selection for fellows is rigorous and will be undertaken by a team of ICTJ experts and peer reviewers. Participants will be expected to contribute to relevant activities in his or her country/region after course completion.

2008 Integrity Awards - Nominations Deadline: 31 August 2008

Transparency International (TI), the global anti-corruption organisation with national chapters in approximately 100 countries, is calling for nominations for the 2008 Integrity Awards. The Awards honour individuals and organisations that have demonstrated exceptional courage and outstanding leadership in fighting corruption. Each year TI receives a substantial number of nominations for candidates who have risked their lives and their livelihoods in the name of justice, transparency and integrity. Winners have come from Asia and Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. They have included journalists and public prosecutors, accountants, government officials and leaders of civil society. For more information, click here.

Le Monitoring des droits de l'homme

17 septembre - 16 décembre 2008

Ce cours à distance a pour objet d'initier les contrôleurs des droits de l'homme et le personnel des organisations internationaux et des ONG (nationales et internationales) à le monitoring les droits de l'homme. Le cours reflète les nombreux principes admis concernant la surveillance des droits de l'homme, qui doivent être respectés dans les opérations en matière de droits de l'homme menées par l'ONU sur le terrain, et comme tel il veut contribuer à accroître l'efficacité des travaux de terrain concernant les droits de l'homme. Même s'il s'adresse en premier lieu aux contrôleurs des droits de l'homme des Nations Unies, on espère qu'il sera également utile aux contrôleurs des droits de l'homme appartenant à d'autres organisations, qu'elles soient de nature intergouvernementale ou non-gouvernementale.

Le cours est constitué d'environ 60 heures de lecture, de travail de groupe interactif, de communication entre étudiants et instructeurs/animateurs et de devoirs et s'étend sur une période de 13 semaines débutant le 17 septembre 2008. Le courrier électronique sera le principal medium pour le cours mais les participants devront pouvoir accéder à l'Internet périodiquement. Le cours est basé sur une participation et une approche d'apprentissage active et met l'accent sur l'apprentissage de pair à pair. L'animateur du cours apportera un soutien individuel si nécessaire. Les participants devront effectuer les lectures demandées, préparer les devoirs intermédiaires et finaux et prendre part aux discussions du groupe. Le nombre maximum de participants est fixé à 25. Les étudiants qui auront suivi le cours dans son intégralité recevront un Certificat de Participation. Il est également possible d'être un auditeur libre du cours.

The International Peace and Development Training Center in cooperation with the Department of Peace Operations (DPO) and PATRIR announces a training programme on 'Designing Peacebuilding Programmes (DPP)' September 22 - 26, 2008 in Cluj - Napoca, Romania

Designing Peacebuilding Programmes (DPP) is a five-days international training programme for practitioners, policy makers, international and national agency staff and NGOs working in peacebuilding, gender, development, conflict transformation, violence prevention and post-war recovery.

The program will help you:

Learn from best practices and lessons learned in peacebuilding and conflict transformation programme development and implementation;

Explore the most up-to-date work being done in the field by national and international organizations around the world;

Develop effective, practical methods for integrating peacebuilding and conflict transformation into the work of your organization/institution/agency;

Explore all stages of programme development, implementation, follow-through and post-programme/ project work in peacebuilding and conflict transformation;
