With the help of a New Tactics microgrant, Chinyere Elendu from the Nigerian Concerned Group for Environment, Population, and Development (N-COGEP-D) organized an interactive session on the New Tactics in Human Rights Project in Imo-state, Nigeria. The meeting, which took place on December 15, 2004, included 15 members of FINGO (Forum for Imo NGOs), a Nigerian network of social workers and other professionals. During the first part of the session, Ms. Elendu shared what she learned at the New Tactics in Human Rights International Symposium. The group then discussed the range of tactics used to address domestic violence and protect women’s rights. Participants noted that the high point of the meeting was Ms. Elendu’s introduction of "tactical mapping." Tactical mapping gives a visual image of institutional and personal relationships in which a human rights abuse exists, and then uses that image as tool to help diagnose problems and opportunities for action, develop strategy and plan more effective tactics in combating the use of torture. Meeting participants then proceeded to map two current human rights issues in Nigeria: domestic violence and the social implications of widowhood. The exercise resulted in the following two maps.
