World Democracy Assembly
Istanbul, April 2-5 2006

More than 500 democracy activists, practitioners, trade unionists, scholars, policy makers, and others engaged in promoting democracy around the world are gathering in Istanbul for the Fourth Assembly of theWorld Movement for Democracy. Participants will convene in practical workshops focused on meeting regional challenges, addressing various areas of democracy work, and building networks across borders. New Tactics in Human Rights is proud to be offering three workshops in collaboration with our partner organization, the Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly, and nine presenters from the New Tactics network.

Topical Workshop: Tactics and Strategies in Human Rights Struggles: Exploring Adaptability

This workshop provides an opportunity for a number of participants to share their valuable experiences implementing tactics and strategies in their human rights struggles through the utilization of the New Tactics materials, tools and methodolgies by adapting these for the advancement of their human rights efforts.

  • Maina Kiai, Kenya – National Human Rights Commission: Introducing concepts, materials and tools on tactics and strategies from the New Tactics Symposium into the Kenyan National Human Rights Commission efforts.

  • Rebecca Z. Sako-John, Nigeria–LEAD: Used a New Tactics micro-grant in 2004-05 to bring 25 organizations in Kaduna State to learn about New Tactics and share their own tactics with each other using New Tactics methodology from "New Tactics in Human Rights: A Resource for Practitioners" and is currently implementing a NED funded project to translate New Tactics thinking and tactical experiences into local languages for radio outreach to communities.

  • Rolly Rosen, Israel – Shatil: Used a New Tactics micro-grant in 2004-05 to translate New Tactics training tools from the "New Tactics in Human Rights: A Resource for Practitioners" into Hebrew for their own center’s training use.

  • Cecil Griffiths, Liberia–LINLEA: Used a New Tactics micro-grant to bring organizations together to share New Tactics thinking and share examples from other countries. As a result, he has worked to develop a coalition of organizations based on the tactic presented by the Coordinadora of Peru at the New Tactics Symposium and is currently implementing a NED funded project to bring strategic and tactical thinking into the coalition and using the tactical map process.

  • Andrey Yurov, Russia – Youth Human Rights Movement: Used a New Tactics microgrant 2004-05 and past and is currently implementing a NED funded project to continue to translate tactics and materials for a Russian New Tactics website and sharing these tactics in seminars with their network.

  • Joyce Kawkabani, Lebanon – Nouvelles Droits de l’Homme: Involved with New Tactics and HCA since participation in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean Seminar in 2003.

Skill Building Workshop: Developing Strategy and Tactics in Human Rights: Using the Tactical Map Process

  • Douglas Johnson, Center for Victims of Torture (CVT)–USA Will provide an overview of the development and strategic use the tactical map process.

  • Ozlem Dalkıran, HCA–Turkey Will provide HCAs plan using the tactical map process for the mapping of torture in Turkey.

  • Cecil Griffiths, Liberia–LINLEA and Center for Criminal Justice Research & Education: Will provide his experience of using the tactical map process for his ToT workshop to prepare these trainers for an upcoming use of the mapping with 75 NGO/Civil society organizations for a gathering in May.
