In Australia Aboriginal people have trouble engaging the interest of the country in our languages because Australians have not been able to accept that they dispossessed 450 individual languages. While Australia cannot accept its history it is impossible to reach agreement on anything relating to culture, economics or justice. We are protecting our languages as best we can but if Australians do not believe we used this land: tilled it, nurtured it, harvested it, protected it, we have a frog's hope on a hotplate of convincing the country that our languages are crucial to national identity.
