This is an exciting time for New Tactics and our partners!  New Tactics will be working with human rights activists in Egypt and Tunisia to develop new resources (new tactics, new notebook, new Arabic website, new translations) and new trainers to learn, apply and further develop the New Tactics methodology, tools and resources in the region.

Brief history of our work in the MENA region

Activists from the MENA region have a history of participation in the New Tactics in Human Rights project - through regional workshops (2003 and 2010), international symposium (2004), publications, web-based discussions and more. These activists encouraged New Tactics to provide more focused training and resources in the region. As a result of this encouragement, New Tactics commenced the MENA Initiative in 2009, with support provided under the Human Rights Fund of the Netherlands Ministry for Foreign Affairs to advancement efforts of human rights in the region.

Our current work in the MENA Region and what we can offer activists in this region

  • A cadre of skilled New Tactics methodology trainers (Arabic/French/English) poised to train and coach a new set of trainers in Egypt and Tunisia to learn, apply and further develop the New Tactics methodology, tools and resources in the region.
  • A vibrant English language website featuring monthly on-line dialogues focusing on peer-to-peer sharing of tactical experiences applied to a wide range issues.
  • An Arabic translation of our Award winning book, New Tactics in Human Rights: A Resource for Practitioners. This is available for free download in Arabic and French.
  • An established presence in Amman, Jordan with CVT providing torture treatment and rehabilitation services to address the needs of Iraqi refugees since 2008.

Future Plans and Partner Opportunities

CVT-New Tactics in Human Rights project has been awarded a two-year grant by OSI/MENA to advance our on-going MENA Initiative through a specific capacity building effort in Egypt and Tunisia. The New Tactics MENA Initiative will:

  • Develop additional New Tactics trainers for face-to-face capacity building.
  • Create a virtual platform for the exchange of experiences to build sustainable support for activists throughout the region.
  • Enable partners to learn, use and train others to use the New Tactics methodology, tools and resources to build capacity in democracy-building and rights-based activities.
  • Leverage New Tactics' on-line community building experience to promote and advance virtual tactical exploration, exchange and information-sharing throughout the region - leading to innovation.

Envisioned Outcomes

  • Enhanced strategic and tactical planning by organizations and activists.
  • New mechanisms, resources and an Arabic language on-line community for sharing information on tactical innovation.
  • New trainers and content creators from Egypt and Tunisia who can inspire others in the region and beyond.
  • New collections of tactics emerging and being adapted in Egypt and Tunisia to share with activists and organizations on regional and global levels.

This is an exciting time for the New Tactics project!  We look forward to continuing to strengthen our online community, develop more useful resources, and explore new ways to support your important work!
