I just heard about an emerging news entity that the HR community would certainly find interesting. Paul Stieger, fomer managing editor of the Wall Street Journal, is launching ProPublica, which will soon be a major nonprofit investigative news outlet. Expect coverage to begin in early 2008.
From the site:
ProPublica is an independent, non-profit newsroom that will produce
investigative journalism in the public interest. Our work will focus
exclusively on truly important stories, stories with “moral force.” We
will do this by producing journalism that shines a light on
exploitation of the weak by the strong and on the failures of those
with power to vindicate the trust placed in them.

Good New for American Media
Thank you so much for passing this information along to the New Tactics network! I couldn't get to the ProPublica website but I did get more of the story at the New York Times.

Pro Publica
THis sounds like a great initiative. When the media are criticised for not doing enough "feel good", uplifting stories, they tend to respond that the public supports the current negative approach and they are only providing what the market demands. If we can support an organization like Pro Publica, we can give lie to that assertion.
The undergraduates in my leadership class shy away from politics as being "dirty" - there are so many wonderful public servants in elected office but we only hear about the crooked ones. So none of them would consider running for office - whereas it is great that many of them want to devote their efforts to community organizing work, we need more talented young people to be inspired to enter public office or the cycle will continue. During the Kennedy administation, many young people were inspired to enter public service, my husband among them. And even before, during WWII and its aftermath, the Marshall plan, this country had some marvellous public servants, both elected and appointed. Hopefully media outlets such as Pro Publica can start to impact public opinion and create a new momentum.
