Mobilizing critical mass in Kenya

Below is a message from Leonida in response to the comment by Sayed:

Hello Sayed From  my experience in Kenya ,  the best starting point is to mobilize a critical mass of people  to give them a collective voice. As you mobilize  carry out popular education  to empower people  on what human rights is and that human rights are and include the principles of human rights , also a good  emphasis should be on human rights based approach to development given that HRBA is holisitic.Do not reinvent the wheel , start with already existing organizations. After mobilization  build alliances  with existing organizations  and know who deals with what issues and how are those issues linked with human rights. Then target specific government agents eg if the human rights violations is  related to torture , your campaigns need to target the ministry of internal security, it its an issue of access to health, target the ministry of  health. Right now as Ebony Youth and Orphans Support Initiative Kenya , we are working on  a social mobilization of widows   to give them a collective voice .As an entry point we are working closely with  people trained in democracy and governance  in 20 local authorities in Kenya which are representing 7 provinces. Our first activity is going to be  sensitization on property and inheritance rights, we will use  international human rights documents eg UDHR, ICESCR and the Kenyan constitution. We also intend to carry out a sensitization on community organizing .At the end of our work we intend to come up with a sympathetic chief's charter  - a group of local chiefs who  are willing to side with widows on property issues , we also intend to  change the attitude of the community towards widows property and inheritance rights and lastly we intend to change  the attitude of widows themselves ( as claim holders)towards their property and inheritance rights Thank You Leonida
