The media is integral to civil society. This dialogue focused on the media, and why practitioners need to become skilled at engaging journalists and news editors in giant media corporations, and alternative grassroots information outfits alike.

When I met Monia Mazigh in 2003, she was a dignified, immensely worried lone campaigner for her husband's release.
On September 25, 2002, Maher Arar left his wife Monia, their 5-year old daughter Barâa and 7-month baby son Houd in Tunisia, where they were vacationing on her side of the family. He had to return to work in Canada. The rest of the family would return later. They bade him farewell and he took a taxi to the airport.
This was the last time Monia and the kids saw him for over a year.

Le 25 septembre 2002, Maher Arar a laissé derrière lui en Tunisie sa femme Monia, sa fillette de 5 ans, Barâa et son poupon de fils âgé d'à peine 7 mois. Maher Arar devait retourner à son travail, au Canada. La famille retournerait plus tard, pour profiter encore un peu des vacances dans sa famille à elle. Ils se sont dit un dernier aurevoir, puis il a pris le taxi qui l'amenait à l'aéroport.
Ce serait la dernière fois que Monia et les enfants le reverraient avant plus d'une année.

Security in-a-box is a toolkit that was created to help human rights defenders and activists protect their privacy and digital security needs. It can also be an important tool for members of the independent media whose work involves human rights.
