Blog: UK community radio

Janey Gordon's picture

In the UK licenced communiy radio is about 8 years old and there are now coming up to 200 stations. Some of these are for fairly general audiences based in a smallish geographic area of about 5k radius and some serve specific communities based on for example,  language, (Dessi serves the Punjabi community), age, (Takeover volunteers 'retire' when they are 18) or ethnicity (Diverse celebrates the many ethnic groups in the town of Luton). The station that I am associated with is Radio LaB, which is based at the University of Bedfordshire, also in Luton.

When I read some of your stories, we have it pretty easy in many ways. Community radio broadcasters in the UK are not usually threatened and generally are seen as local people who facilitate and aid the local community by providing relevant information and  entertainment.

Many organizations and individuals are using podcasts as a platform for education about human rights abuses, and what is being done to uphold and restore our most basic rights. I have attached several links leading to organizations that are currently using podcasts to further human rights:

Hi everyone,

There is a really great new tool that I would like to let people know about.  It's called Security in-a-box, and was a joint effort between Tactical Technology Collective and Front Line.  Security in-a-box is a toolkit that was created to help human rights defenders and activists protect their privacy and digital security needs. It can also be an important tool for members of the independent media whose work involves human rights.

Community radio and short radio use in Zimbabwe

Background and Context

Zimbabwe is largely a closed society in the area broadcasting media. The Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) has a monopoly over airwaves which it inherited from the colonial administration.
