THE NEW TACTICS NEWSLETTER – December 17, 2004
Symposium Participants Share New Tactics with the Help of Microgrants
In Kyrgyzstan, 30 NGO leaders, legislators and journalists will meet to develop tactics that may encourage transnational companies to meet their legal and moral obligations to citizens. In Nigeria, representatives of 30 organizations will gather to begin compiling a database of innovative tactics being used in that country. In El Salvador, community leaders will explore ways to use paraprofessionals to make the legal system more accessible.
All of these events are being led by participants at the New Tactics in Human Rights International Symposium and are funded in part by a number of microgrants. These microgrants are making it possible for participants inspired by their experience at the Symposium to share what they learned.
Transferring Tactics: Successes and Pitfalls in Eastern Europe
Tactical choices made by activists in Serbia, Georgia and Ukraine have shown that tactics can be transferable. Visit our online forum to discuss how Ivan Marovic from the Otpor! student movement recently collaborated with the Pora movement during the Ukrainian elections.
Read the Final Symposium Report
One participant told us, "The symposium was an "eye opener" to me. Many people will benefit from the New Tactics ideas and the multiplier effect will be overwhelming." Comments like these, both praise and criticism, taught us much about the value of the Symposium and New Tactics project. We used them to compile a final report that we hope will be valuable to others who want to learn more about the principles and methodology of New Tactics and to share them with others.
Symposium Presentations Online
Many Symposium participants told us that they would like copies of the presentations made in the workshops, either to review presentations they particularly enjoyed or to see others they weren’t able to attend. Most of these presentations are now available to view online or download on the individual workshop pages.
Weaving New Tactics into Your World
Do you want to share your experience with New Tactics with others? Are you looking for more resources on tactical and strategic thinking? Weaving New Tactics into Your World is an online interactive tool that includes ideas and resources for getting more involved in the New Tactics project and for sharing the project with others. While these materials were originally designed for participants in the New Tactics Symposium, we believe they can also inform and inspire others who were not able to attend or who may be new to the project."
