Making a World of Difference: the Symposium Video
We are pleased to announce the release of "Making a World of Difference," a thirteen minute video documenting the New Tactics in Human Rights International Symposium (September 27-30, 2004). The video also aims to help activists introduce New Tactics ideas to their own organization, networks and others interested in improving their capacity and effectiveness in promoting human rights. The New Tactics in Human Rights International Symposium was the first training meeting of its kind, bringing together human rights activists from a broad range of disciplines to focus not on a single issue or region but on a full range of tactical possibilities and possible solutions. About 450 human rights advocates from 89 countries, representing fields as diverse as domestic violence and sustainable development, gathered for four days in Ankara, Turkey.
DO HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSERS TAKE SHELTER IN YOUR COUNTRY?
We interviewed Sandra Coliver of The Center for Justice and Accountability (CJA) about their use of civil litigation to obtain reparation for survivors and challenge the impunity of abusers living in the United States. Based in San Francisco, California, CJA works to deter torture and other severe human rights abuses around the world by helping survivors hold their persecutors accountable. CJA is the leading U.S. center representing survivors in civil suits against persecutors living in or visiting the United States.
In cooperation with Moira Feeney, another CJA attorney, Sandra recently completed "Reparations: Using civil lawsuits to obtain reparation for survivors of human rights abuses and to challenge the impunity of their abusers," as part of the New Tactics Notebook Series.
Sandra Coliver also participated in the New Tactics West Group Regional Training Workshop and International Symposium, where she presented this tactic in detail.

Activists Promote Tactical and Strategic Thinking Around the World
Activists across issue areas, sectors and geographic boundaries are working to promote tactical and strategic thinking in the broader human rights community. A practitioner in Albania recently organized an interactive session with youth to identify tactics to advance human rights. What are activists doing in your country?
