    • Who we are Salvagente (The Lifejacket) programme is a network for popular nonviolent defence of people at risk due to their engagement against violence and for Human Rights. The Lifejacket team work together to support human rights defenders and active citizens engaged for justice and truth, threatened by political violence thanks to:
      • Protective accompaniment in public events;
      • Social relationship network;
      • Visibility to the witness in public events and schools, and on smart Web platform (micro-blog);
      • Promotion of value of active citizenship.
    • The team, composed by young active citizens, facilitate and coordinate network of people in order to support who, due to their choices, live in a condition of safety risk as well as frailty in everyday life. The activities of "The Lifejacket" programme have positive outcomes on targeted people, because:
      • Reduce violence level, because the cost of an attacks towards activists surrounded by civil society is more expensive for violent actors;
      • Prevent more serious harass against potential victim of violence;
      • Improve their quality life;
      • Also after a threat or attack the awareness of civil society can condemn the fact and stop legitimization of violence. In this direction the programme change the common sense and imaginary about use of violence as immoral response;
      • Improve Human Rights (art.3 Universal Declaration: “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person”).
    • Be active in support these people is important for the team too, because:
      • Links civil society with the work of communities leaders, professionals and activists for Human Rights committed to justice and peace;
      • Empower young people who chose to engage themselves, and to involve their communities, in solidarity with victims of political violence due to their active roles in the society; young people can feel empowered assuming an active role in a bigger social movement for justice and peace.
      • Offers also a positive educational model for young people.
    • Struggle against illegality and Mafia’s violence as a specific local kind of political violence is one of the main aims of Lifejacket activities. Our vision. The Lifejacket Programme envisions a world in which young people will be protagonist of social change (close to people engaged directly in struggle for justice), be careful of environmental and sustainable lifestyles, and people address transformation of social conflicts of everyday life in non violent way. Our mission. The Lifejacket programme works on and in local community in order to open spaces to improve participation of young people into political life of their context, in which meet the alterity of others, learn in a informal peer-to-peer perspective and experiment active citizenship. The interest on social use of new media is one of the main motivations behind the "LIFEJACKET” (Salvagente) project as well as the idea that the new media formats and communications should try to face real social problems and issues. In this mind frame is positioned the will to create new opportunities to socialize, with the joined effort of high tech solutions. Creativity and intuitions will be necessary to understand and interpret the new ways, formats and languages of communication. If someone, now, would like to talk about media alphabetization of young people or, more in general, new media education, we believe that should not focus on creating new tools and technical opportunities (which are over produced), instead he should create a need of such technology in a social and cultural way. The challenge is to experiment an authentic social and cultural use of communication means, to truly represent the real world. The idea is to link Web multimedia platform with real and helping relationship social network. It's a common conviction that languages, new technologies and performative use of media (from which the name of our laboratory: PerformingMediaLab), have real conditions to multiply citizenship opportunities. The Web is the new public space in which exercise our role of active citizenship, because in the ICT age (Information and Communication Technologies) the struggle for justice is played also on the Web. The Lifejacket activities are:
      • To have regular weekly coordination meeting;
      • To update daily of the Web platform;
      • To take care of relationship with witness and human rights defenders: depending on single case the team assure protective accompaniment in public events or provide an informal help relationship (active listening and private meeting with political violence victims);
      • To organize public events to sensibilize communities (especially schools) and to promote active citizenship
    • The Lifejacket is part of PerformingMediaLab (http://performingmedia.org/lab/pie): it was born 5 years ago in Piemonte, to create a laboratory open to different possibilities of social and creative use of new media. It is described by a field that crosses the new forms of social organisation through the networks and a digital creativity that redefines ethical and esthetical production, mixing society, art, communication and develops social networking. To host the activities of PerformingMedialab, two years ago, the city of Torino has given to Media Lab the management of a garage confiscated to the Camorra criminal organisation. A work of project, renovation and management has improved the plans with a network of Italian and European people involved. Projects of media-activism and media-education were realised with the help of European Union as Stories On Geographies, a participatory geoblog on places of antifascist resistance. In these years, thanks to individual study, to group education and direct experience, cumulated during study and projects, has developed a big asset of knowledge and know-how. In specific, these are the skills and knowledge of the team:
      • Computer scientist, with web developing skills, graphical and design knowledge. Audio-video skills.
      • Journalist with multimedia knowledge, writing and analysis ability, team work and smart redaction.
      • Press journalist, with marketing and promotional professionals.
    • Project manager with exceptional managing skills, able to focus on the European vision of the project.
