FEATURED DISCUSSION: Engaging the Media in Human Rights – OPEN March 26 - April 1
Engaging the media in human rights is an on-going challenge and opportunity. The media play a critical role in civil society as carriers of information about how people behave, and consequently, have the ability to influence how people behave. These roles create a unique opportunity for human rights practitioners to communicate with a larger audience than otherwise possible. The challenge is to tap into this resource – and engage the media. Join our featured resource people and share your own experiences, insights and questions (www.newtactics.org).
Our featured resource people include:
- Alan Davis, Institute for War and Peace Reporting, currently heads up IWPR’s development and programme work in Asia.
- Philippe Duhamel, writes the interTactica blog on the New Tactics website in English and French from Canada.
- Mufuliat Fijabi, Senior Programme Officer, BAOBAB for Women’s Human Rights in Nigeria.
- Davinder Kumar, journalist from India now relocated in London, with over 10 years experience working in the field of human rights.
- Sharon Lamwaka, Communications and Advocacy Officer, African Centre for Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture Victims (ACTV) in Uganda.
SAVE THE DATES - Featured Discussion March 26 to April

RESOURCES
Our New Tactics featured resources for February include a variety of tactical notebooks that used the engagement of media to highly benefit the outcome of tactics. The engagement of media is very often a support tactic to ensure the desired impact of another tactic. For great ideas on how to engage the media, please see these tactical notebooks written by our some of our February featured resource practitioners as well as other New Tactics network members:
- A Mock Tribunal to Advance Change by By Mufuliat Fijabi, BAOBAB for Women’s Human Rights, Nigeria (February Featured Resource Person)
- The Dilemma Demonstration by Philippe Duhamel (February Featured Resource Person)
- Engaging the Media - Presentations from the New Tactics Liberia Workshop (February 2007), Sharon Lamwaka, ACTV, Uganda (February Featured Resource Person) and Victor Bwire, previous Communications and Advocacy Coordinator at the Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU), Kenya
- Engaging the Media: Building support for minimum wage reform by Jee Hyeon Kim, Korean Women Workers Associations United (KWWAU)
