IN THE NEWSROOM: Request for New Tactics Partner Grant Proposals (up to USD 6,000)
New Tactics in Human Rights, in partnership with the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), is currently accepting partner grant proposals for 2008-2009. The application deadline for these Partner Grants is 27 October 2008. These funds are intended for human rights practitioners to share, translate, adapt and/or apply the New Tactics materials and resources for strategic and tactical innovation in local human rights struggles as well as share examples of innovative tactics with a broad range of people. FEATURED DIALOGUE: USING THEATRE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS EDUCATION AND ACTION – OPEN TODAY!
This month's online dialogue will feature how theater is being used to promote, educate, motivate and move people to action regarding human rights, development and issues "screaming for" change. This is an opportunity for you to ask questions, share experiences, and build connections with practitioners using theatre. We will be sharing stories of how theatre is used as a powerful tool in human rights work. We will also share theatre exercises and tools that have been useful for groups and communities looking to solve their problems. Join this online dialogue and share your own stories and resources!

SAVE THE DATES: 19 to 25 November – Human Rights Education: Incorporating practical experience
Next month, 19 to 25 November the Featured Dialogue will be “Human Rights in Higher Education: Incorporating practical experience”. Advancing human rights education, at all levels of the education system, is critical for building public awareness, understanding and cultures that foster human rights. The dialogue in November will feature ideas, experiences and methods from higher education programs for incorporating practical experience into their human rights curriculums to better prepare the next generation of human rights advocates.

The Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP) at Columbia University is designed to prepare proven human rights leaders from the Global South and marginalized communities in the U.S. to participate in national and international policy debates on globalization by building their skills, knowledge, and contacts. The Program features a four-month residency at Columbia University in New York City with a structured curriculum of advocacy, networking, skills-building, and academic coursework. The New Tactics in Human Rights Project is an international initiative led by a diverse group of organizations and practitioners from around the world. The project is coordinated by the Center for Victims of Torture and grew out of its experience as a creator of new tactics and a treatment center that also advocates for the protection of human rights from a unique position—one of healing and reclaiming civic leadership.
