Mobilizing cultural resources to build an anti-racist youth network

Never Again mobilizes cultural resources to build an anti-racist youth network in Poland.  Through targeted music and sports events, the organization has been able to recruit and sustain popular involvement in anti-racist action. Youth mobilized through Never Again’s events often become involved as network anti-racism correspondents at the local level throughout Poland.  As a direct result of its youth-focused campaigns, Never Again has established a network of 150 voluntary correspondents who report on racist and xenophobic activity in their communities.  Never Again is able to share the correspondents’ reports on the national and international level.  It has also raised awareness about racism among a much larger cross-section of Polish society.

Empowering children with information, skills and formal structures to advocate for their own rights

The Concerned for Working Children (CWC) facilitates the establishment of formal structures that allow children to advocate for their own rights.  Makkala Panchayats, Task Forces, and working children unions to promote children’s political participation in their communities.  Makkala Panchayats are children’s village councils that participate in the development of the village and that address the children’s concerns.  Task Forces are comprised of children and adults who work together to link the children and the local governments.  Working children unions are of and by working children.  The unions are powerful advocates of the rights of working children.  These tactics of organization-building empower working children to take part of the political space and decision-making process in their communities and help to eradicate child labor.

Empowering the youth with democratic tools to promote coexistence

The Jewish-Arab Community Association (JACA) in the Wolfson Neighborhood of Acre, Israel, has a youth parliament in which Jewish and Arab youths from the community can take part to learn about and put into practice the concept of coexistence.  JACA teaches democracy and tolerance and helps to develop lines of communication and civil debate.  Through this tactic, young leadership dedicated to coexistence in Israel is developed.

notebook: Sending Out an SMS: A rapid-response mobile phone network engages a youth constituency to stop torture fast

In this notebook text-messages and short message services are used to engage young people to quickly stop torture.  Amnesty International-Netherlands recognized that text-messaging was an easy medium to use to reach out to youth.  It was successfully used to protest torture when the Democratic Republic of Congo arrested a journalist. 

notebook: Breaking the Silence

This notebook describes how Never Again (nigdy Wiecej), a Polish anti-racism group uses a number of tactics to attract volunteers and spread information about hate crimes and racism in Poland.  Never again targets young people through concerts and football games and recruits them to join the cause.  Some of these volunteers become correspondents that collect and publish information about racism in Poland and send this information to the media. This tactic encourages the spread of information for general education.
