Now accepting grant proposals for 2008-2009 New Tactics - NED Sponsored Grant Partner Initiative! Deadline 27 October

New Tactics has received a grant from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED): "Resources for Strategic Thinking and Tactical Innovation in Local Human Rights Struggles" which provides the opportunity for New Tactics to work with up to eight partner organizations beginning 01 December through 31 July 2009. These funds are intended to make it possible for human rights practitioners to share, translate, adapt and/or apply the New Tactics materials and resources for strategic and tactical innovation in local human rights struggles as well as share examples of innovative tactics with a broad range of people.

New Tactics Online Database - Redesigned!

All over the world people are using innovative tactics to help ensure human rights are preserved. In many cases, other human rights advocates would benefit from learning about these experiences. The New Tactics online database, recently redesigned, is a growing collection of such tactics, described in a way to be useful and even inspirational for others who can apply them to their own situation as is, or modify and combine tactics to form their own.

We encourage you to browse these tactics, search for specific ones, ask questions, or start a discussion about them, and share your own experiences and innovative ways you approach in addressing a human rights issue close to your heart. We are actively seeking to add to this growing resource of new ways to foster a better world.

Engaging Key Stakeholders

This notebook looks at the organization CARE-Bangladesh and how they engaged key stakeholders in the fight against HIV/AIDS. While Bangladesh has a very low infection rate, their surrounding countries had high rates and they realized that they needed to prevent the virus from spreading. They realized that transportation workers were extremely vulnerable and integrated an education and awareness campaign with the truck drivers union. The program was eventually passed onto the drivers and made their own. These education programs have expanded to include health care services and numerous other successes and benefits.

This notebook is featured in an article written for the August 2008 Drum Beat Chat discussion, written by a New Tactics member, Amanda Atwood of the Kubatana Trust of Zimbabwe, a New Tactics NED partner! In the article, Amanda looks at two case studies (one from Bangladesh and one from Zimbabwe) that explore local communication approaches to addressing HIV/AIDS. Based on these examples, she advocates for a holistic, participatory approach to the AIDS epidemic, worldwide.

Using a Café to Raise Awareness about HIV/AID

In Hanoi, HIV/AIDS prevention has taken a novel approach in setting up a consultation and counseling center in a café . The initiative reaches out to youth and provides them with a comfortable environment where they and their friends can hang out as well as receive information from a female physician about reproductive health or HIV/AIDS.

Despite the recent rise in the number of infections in Vietnam, the issue still remains a cultural taboo. Parents and teachers are often too uncomfortable or uninformed to be an effective resource for information. The café offers anonymous consultation services and a welcoming environment that is getting more and more customers every day.

Powerful Persuasion in Cameroon

Our grant recipients at the Cameroon Trauma Center have been using New Tactics to build and strengthen relationships with Allies. Working with several women's organizations, they looked at the tactic Powerful Persuasion, out of Ghana, and developed creative and innovative ways to solve the problems of early marriage and lack of education for young girls.

In addition, New Tactics is pleased to announce that the NED has awarded the New Tactics project with another grant for 2008-09. An announcement will be posted in the near future regarding the grant application process. Watch this space for news of the accomplishments of the other 2007-08 grantees.

Using New Tactics in Kyrgyzstan

In Kyrgyzstan, the Citizens Against Corruption (CAC) has been using New Tactics materials to bring insight and justice to the recent election, women's issues and the mining industry. They used and translated the Familiar Tools, Emerging Issues notebook into Russian and Kyrgyz. This helped them monitor the recent election and mobilize the youth to try and rectify the anomalies they discovered.

New Tactics workbook – now available in Indonesian

The New Tactics in Human Rights, through a grant provided by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), was able to provide eight grants in 2007-08 to organizations using New Tactics resources and tools to further their efforts. We are very proud to feature the wonderful work that they have been doing.

In Indonesia, the PEC (People's Empowerment Consortium) has used New Tactics materials to further the discussion and open new avenues for action regarding the truth and reconciliation process. In addition, PEC translated the New Tactics in Human Rights: A Resource for Practitioners into the Indonesian language. The translation is available for free download.

In addition, New Tactics is pleased to announce that the NED has awarded the New Tactics project with another grant for 2008-09. Video Advocacy - Featured Organizations and Resources

Our resources practitioners are forging new paths on the road to social change using video advocacy. They have a variety of contributions and portfolios that they’ve made available for use. Witness has produced a free book that is a how to guide for video advocacy, Fahamu has several media and information databases available for use, and the Video Volunteers have a nice examples list of all that can be accomplished. Numerous other organizations have wonderful portfolios for browsing, including the Chiapas Media Project, Burma Issues, Breakthrough Media, and more!

Resources featured within the Training for Nonviolent Action dialogue

Our Online Dialogue on 'Training for Nonviolent Action' was well attended with over 120 comments! We have organized a collection of great training resources that were shared within this dialogue. The resources are categorized under eight themes: General, Theory, Methods, Tools, Training, Exercises, Case Studies and Examples, and Recommended Books, Films and Games. This collection of resources represents volumes of work and analysis from the leading nonviolent trainers and training networks in the world.

Leveraging the Money

The tactical notebook, Leveraging the Money, by Ulrich Mueller describes a strategy used by Information and Action Network (FIAN) to influence large mining operations to stop human rights abuses. They accomplished this by putting pressure on banks that invest in those mines. FIAN began using this tactic in Peru and Turkey where, in some cases, German investors were involved in financing the mines. This allowed FIAN to make connections between human rights abuses in other countries and Germany. The featured notebook focuses on a gold-mining project in Ghana. This tactic provides an important leverage for communities trying to counter damage caused by corporate projects.
