Regional Training Workshops

As part of its effort to promote the use of tactics and strategic thinking, the New Tactics project and its partner organizations have held five regional training workshops. For each workshop, participants (ranging from 10 to 50) with experience in using innovative tactics were selected. Participants then gathered together to train each other in the use of their tactic and to create training materials. Upon returning home, participants shared the tactics they have learned with their colleagues, friends and other organizations in their community. Organizations have incorporated new approaches in their work as a result of sending a member to a workshop. Additionally, in the months following each workshop, a selected number of participants created tactical notebooks with in-depth information on how to use their tactic. More than 500 democracy activists, practitioners, trade unionists, scholars, policy makers, and others engaged in promoting democracy around the world are gathering in Istanbul for the Fourth Assembly of theWorld Movement for Democracy. Participants will convene in practical workshops focused on meeting regional challenges, addressing various areas of democracy work, and building networks across borders. New Tactics in Human Rights is proud to be offering three workshops in collaboration with our partner organization, the Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly, and nine presenters from the New Tactics network.

Topical Workshop: Tactics and Strategies in Human Rights Struggles: Exploring Adaptability

This workshop provides an opportunity for a number of participants to share their valuable experiences implementing tactics and strategies in their human rights struggles through the utilization of the New Tactics materials, tools and methodolgies by adapting these for the advancement of their human rights efforts.

Maina Kiai, Kenya – National Human Rights Commission: Introducing concepts, materials and tools on tactics and strategies from the New Tactics Symposium into the Kenyan National Human Rights Commission efforts.

Rebecca Z. Sako-John, Nigeria–LEAD: Used a New Tactics micro-grant in 2004-05 to bring 25 organizations in Kaduna State to learn about New Tactics and share their own tactics with each other using New Tactics methodology from "New Tactics in Human Rights: A Resource for Practitioners" and is currently implementing a NED funded project to translate New Tactics thinking and tactical experiences into local languages for radio outreach to communities.

Rolly Rosen, Israel – Shatil: Used a New Tactics micro-grant in 2004-05 to translate New Tactics training tools from the "New Tactics in Human Rights: A Resource for Practitioners" into Hebrew for their own center’s training use.

Cecil Griffiths, Liberia–LINLEA: Used a New Tactics micro-grant to bring organizations together to share New Tactics thinking and share examples from other countries. As a result, he has worked to develop a coalition of organizations based on the tactic presented by the Coordinadora of Peru at the New Tactics Symposium and is currently implementing a NED funded project to bring strategic and tactical thinking into the coalition and using the tactical map process.

Andrey Yurov, Russia – Youth Human Rights Movement: Used a New Tactics microgrant 2004-05 and past and is currently implementing a NED funded project to continue to translate tactics and materials for a Russian New Tactics website and sharing these tactics in seminars with their network.

Tolekan Ismailova, Kyrgyzstan – Civil Society Against Corruption: Used a New Tactics microgrant in 2004-05 to translate New Tactics tactical materials from the International Symposium workshop on "Following the money".
