This Scholars at Risk training opportunity will prepare scientific associations to respond to alleged violations of the human rights of scientists. Space is limited, please register by December 15, 2009.

Scholars at Risk (SAR) is an international network of over 200 higher education institutions in 27 countries working to promote academic freedom and to defend the human rights of scholars around the world. Since its founding in 2000, SAR has received over 1000 requests for assistance from scholars in over 120 countries.

The AAAS Science and Human Rights Coalition Working Group on the Welfare of Scientists works to protect and defend the human rights of scientists under threat. In recognition of the scientific community’s strong support for the human rights of individual scientists, the Working Group works to expand participation and work in this area, and to improve its effectiveness.

The session will train participants in:

  • The role of international and regional human rights standards in protecting individual scientists
  • Procedures for evaluating requests for assistance from colleagues at-risk
  • Effective response strategies
  • Proven public and private advocacy techniques
  • Quality alert-writing
  • Intelligent ways to engage key stakeholders
