OPEN MEMORY: USING DATABASES TO RAISE AWARENESS
Raising awareness of past human rights abuses is an important step in rebuilding the affected community. Memoria Abierta (Open Memory), a human rights organization in Argentina, organized thousands of documents related to state terrorism and made them accessible to the public through an online database. Want to learn more? This tactic explored in depth as part of our Tactical Notebook Series. English and Spanish versions are available. [read this notebook]

LOOKING FOR NEW TACTICS? TRY OUR ONLINE DATABASE

With the help of human rights practitioners worldwide, the New Tactics project has compiled more than 150 tactical case studies in our online database. From our website, users can search the database for tactics that they want to learn more about and even apply to their own particular human rights situation. Each entry includes a detailed description of how the tactic was implemented, tips for transferring the tactic to another situation and contact information for the individual or group that used it. ONLINE WORKSHOP COMES TO A CLOSE

"I have found your resource on understanding strategy and tactics very illuminating and empowering. It opens my eyes to a more purposeful, resourceful and results oriented way of doing human rights work," concluded a human rights practitioner from Nigeria during the New Tactics Online Discussion Workshop. During the past five weeks (October 10 - November 16), more than 40 human rights practitioners from 24 countries have participated in an online, facilitated discussion designed to help them analyze their human rights situation in terms of tactics and strategy. Specifically, activists used training resources, such as Tactical Mapping, to analyze the efforts of their organization and develop new ways to carry out their work.

The New Tactics Online Discussion Workshop was a pilot event to help connect activists with each other and New Tactics Tools to help them more effectively address human rights challenges.  Through this process, the project adapted its training methodologies to allow virtual use of New Tacticstraining tools and materials. We hope to hold a similar event in early 2006. Stay tuned to www.newtactics.org for more information about future training events.

TACTIC-OF-THE-MONTH TO BEGIN IN NOVEMBER

If you’re like most human rights practitioners we know, you don’t often have time to research new ways to do your work. To make it easier, we’re launching a Tactic-of-the-Month email service later this month. Designed for busy activists, each email includes a brief tactic summary and a link to publications and other resources related to that tactic. All current subscribers of the New TacticseNewsletter will receive a Tactic-of-the-Month email.
