Providing free legal services to victims of police torture

A collective of attorneys in the Izmir Bar Association (IBA) in Turkey organized its members to provide free services to victims of police torture.

Embarrassing public officials to make them comply with child labor laws

In the mid-1990s the South Asian Coalition on Child Servitude publicly exposed the use of child domestic help by government officials in order to highlight the widespread problem of child servitude in India. When SACCS received information that an official’s household was engaging children as domestic help demonstrations were organized in front of officials’ residences to focus public attention on the practices of that particular household. Because of the embarrassment of the public spotlighting, the prime minister issued an order reinforcing the government’s stance that by no means could government officials employ child laborers.

Reframing the issue of poverty as a human rights issue

A group of women in the poorest district of Pennsylvania came together in 1991 and organized the Kensington Welfare Rights Union (KWRU) after welfare cuts threatened their families and community. KWRU sought to reframe the welfare debate as part of a larger fight for human rights, rather than one about personal responsibility for poverty or charity-based responses from governments.

Providing DNA testing and legal assistance to prisoners who may have been wrongly accused of a crime

The Innocence Project involves lawyers, law students, and law schools in assisting prisoners who challenge their convictions based on DNA testing of evidence.

Citizen Initiative for Constant Light mobilized 30 million people in Turkey to turn off and on their lights to demand that the government act against corruption. The action resulted from public outrage after a car crash openly revealed connections between government, police and the mob.

Targeting Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to encourage the removal of discriminatory messages

The International Network against Discrimination on the Internet (INDI) is committed to helping the Buraku people of Japan find liberation through fighting cyber discrimination by requesting the removal of discriminatory messages from of the internet.  With the help of its sister organization, the Network Against Discrimination and for Research on Human Rights (NDHR), INDI volunteers contact Internet Service Providers (ISP) both in Japan and abroad and request the removal of discriminatory information about the Buraku people.

Setting up an independent commission to fight corruption

The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) employs tactics aimed at gaining public confidence and participation to fight corruption in Hong Kong.   These tactics include corruption prevention, operations, preventive education, and enlisting the support from the public.  ICAC was established as an anti-corruption organization totally independent from any department of the government and police.  ICAC is committed to fight corruption with its approach of investigation, prevention, and education.  It targets all areas where corruption might exist in order to prevent any loopholes. These areas are the governmental, public, and private sectors.  Through this tactic, ICAC has restored public confidence in the government to end corruption in the country.

Collaborating with the border police to prevent trafficking

Maiti Nepal works closely with the Nepali government to improve the interception of trafficked women and girls. Maiti Nepal’s staff assists the border police by interviewing every vulnerable girl and woman who crosses the border while their traveling companions are interrogated by the police. Maiti Nepal also operates transit homes along the Nepali and Indian border in order to provide shelter and services for the trafficked girls and women identified through their intervention. Maiti Nepal’s border guarding operation has not only rescued hundreds of potential trafficking victims. The tactic has also resulted in legal proceedings against human traffickers, putting pressure upon local administrations to take action against the criminals.
