Providing companies with a plan for a practical HIV policy that reduces the cost of the treatment for all employees
Project M.O.M. Sunshine in Cameroon aims to convince companies to provide medical, psychological and nutritional support to employees living with HIV/AIDS. Their main tactic is to present the company with a plan for a practical HIV policy that reduces the cost of the treatment and that benefits the company’s public image. In particular, the project negotiates with insurance companies dependent on company contracts to improve insurance policies with regard to workers with HIV, and making them more affordable to companies.

Employing community health volunteers to administer low-cost HIV/AIDS medications, treatment and support
Recognizing that Haiti is rich in human resources, Partners in Health (PIH) defies the international community’s traditional HIV/AIDS treatment model by training community health volunteers, called accompagnateurs, to provide support to persons living with the disease. Ninety-five percent of the world’s HIV/AIDS cases occur in developing nations where little or no access to affordable treatment exists. Even so, conventional wisdom in international circles often points to the lack of medical and economic infrastructure and the high cost of treatment as reasons why HIV/AIDS initiatives cannot work in poor countries. Haiti, the western hemisphere’s poorest and most HIV-affected nation, is one example of the intersection between poverty and disease. PIH has reported extraordinary results from incorporating community health workers into HIV/AIDS treatment management.
Challenging the government to make defiance of pharmaceutical patent laws legal
In June 2000, the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) began importing generic HIV/AIDS drugs in defiance of patent laws to pressure the drug companies to reduce the cost of drugs as well as pressure the South African government to allow the importation of generic versions of patented drugs. The goal of the tactic was to increase access to affordable HIV/AIDS prescription drugs for all South Africans.
TAC’s Defiance Campaign established a network of doctors and pharmacists who prescribe high quality, low cost, generic medicines sold in other countries to South Africans infected with HIV/AIDS. As a result, TAC experienced increased support and the political leverage necessary to provide affordable treatment to South Africans with HIV/AIDS.
