Global Youth Connect

Global Youth Connect is dedicated to empowering youth to advance human rights and
create a more just world.

We envision a world where the human rights of all people
are equally respected, fully protected and universally
realized. We also envision a world where all young
people – irregardless of nationality, ethnicity,
religion, class, gender or other differences – are
encouraged and empowered to non-violently claim their
own rights and serve as advocates for the rights of
others.

GYC's programs provide youth (ages 14-30) from a wide range of
ethnic, national, economic and religious backgrounds
with opportunities to enhance their ability to take
action on pressing human rights issues. Our programs
weave together: experiential training programs and
workshops; skills development in grassroots organizing,
conflict transformation, human rights activism and
leadership; mentoring and technical support for on-going
organizing efforts; on-the-ground experience in human
rights organizations and doing human rights work; and
connection to a global community of youth activists.

Lorraine Teel

Lorraine Teel is the Executive Director of the Minnesota AIDS Project (MAP). Founded in 1983, 2008 marks the 25th year of service for MAP. MAP envisions a world free of AIDS. Our mission is to lead Minnesota’s fight to stop HIV through advocacy, education and service. We stop HIV the “social disease” by making sure the public has current, accurate information, individuals use their legal protections responsibly, and we are all engaged in creating smart public policies. We stop new infections by providing effective education, especially for those at highest risk as well as to the public at large. Finally, we stop the devastating effect HIV has on people’s health by ensuring their access to health care and the services they need to use that care.

MAP provides prevention and outreach services for Minnesotans with questions about HIV transmission, testing and services. In addition, MAP offers targeted prevention programs for gay and bisexual men, gay and bisexual men who also inject drugs (primarily methamphetamine) and for all other injecting drug users and their sexual partners. MAP also operates the AIDSLine, both a telephone and web-based service for those with questions about HIV, including the capacity for live chat. MAP also provides range of supporting services for those living with HIV throughout the State of Minnesota.

Finally, MAP works on the advocacy issues related to reducing stigma and discrimination and to insure that those at risk for or living with HIV are treated fairly. Our work in this arena includes advocacy both at the State capitol and in Washington DC to insure that non-U.S. born Minnesotans are treated fairly and that international relief efforts to aid those affected around the world by HIV receive the services and support needed.

I am the husband of Jennifer and father of a four-½ year old – Ella Rae - and have been happily married for 10 years, despite several bouts of unemployment (for really, really goodreasons). I was born in Staten Island, New York where all of my extended family still lives, but grew up inMiddletown, NJ, a homogenous suburb of New Jersey not far from the JerseyShore. I’ve spent the last 15 years working and living in different places, including the Bronx, New York, Washington Heights, New York, Philadelphia,Atlanta, Georgia and Lumberton, North Carolina. I love my Italian-American roots and traditions, but alsofind it challenging, but necessary to talk with my family about white privilege and racism in the United States. Our home is in Montclair, New Jersey and we workin New York City.

I am now the director of training and organization development for Independence Care System, a non-profit organization thatcoordinates health care and other services for adults with physical disabilities. I am an adult educator with nearly 15 years of training, organizing and political experience in the non-profit and public sectors. Myprimary interests are in leadership and group development, diversity and conflictresolution. I have experience developing curriculum, facilitating trainings, designing educational events and conferences, managing training programs andplanning and directing issue campaigns. Before Independence Care System, Iworked as a consultant focused on facilitating labor-management collaborationin health care.

Prior to the work as a consultant, I was a stay athome dad. After leaving work as acommunity organizer, I managed the Neighborhood Leadership Institute at theCitizens Committee for New York City, a training program for grassroots leadersand organizations from neighborhoods around the City. I began my career as alegislative aide in the Maryland State Legislature. I worked as a community organizer in New York City andPhiladelphia on the issues of public school reform, housing and welfare. I have also worked as a union organizerin New York City, North Carolina and Atlanta, Georgia. I have an M.A. in adultand organizational learning from Teachers College, Columbia University, where I focused my study on the role of adult education in social change.
