Participants

More than 400 people from more 80 countries attended the Symposium. They are a diverse group of people from all around the world (these breakdowns are approximate): Africa: 25 percent Asia: 18 percent South America: 14 percent North America: 14 percent Eastern Europe: 13 percent Western Europe: 8 percent Middle East: 8 percent The participants include a mental disabilities advocate from Kosovo, a journalist from Burundi, a forensic anthropologist from Argentina and a former Buddhist monk. After the Symposium, each participant has been asked to share what they learn in some way. Here’s what some of them plan to do:
  • An activist from Iran plans to give a presentation and put information about the project on his organization’s web site.
  • A participant from Liberia will include information about the New Tactics project in workshops given to law enforcement officers.
  • A participant from Kenya plans to use connections made at the Symposium to expand the reach of a Civil Society Watch program, which monitors situations where the rights to free association and free speech are threatened.
