Regional Caucuses
Continuing the Work Around the World
Symposium participants began laying the foundation for future cooperation before they even left Ankara. They gathered twice during the Symposium in regional caucuses, where they could build networks and make plans for using the principles of the New Tactics project.
Regions
- Anglophone Africa
- Francophone Africa
- Middle East and North Africa
- Asia
- Central and Southern Europe
- Eurasia
- Northern and Western Europe
- Latin America and the Caribbean
- North America
- Turkey
Each region tackled the task in a different way. The African regional caucus participants, for example, focused on the responsibility they felt they had to share their experiences at the Symposium with those who weren’t able to be in Ankara. Five participants volunteered to be regional "working group" members to coordinate and help share information. The participants developed a list of intermediate goals:
- Holding sub-regional workshops.
- Developing an African Guide (similar to New Tactics in Human Rights: A Resource for Practitioners) that highlights the range of tactics being used in Africa.
- Connecting with pre-existing meetings. Participants agreed that there may be some difficulty to raise funds for a regional meeting, but when other groups, such as ECOWAS or regional networks meet, there might be opportunities to share the New Tactics project.
- Connecting with other movements. For example, there is an effort to bring together civil society and national human rights institutions. This could be a nice fit for New Tactics in Africa - to integrate new tactics into this process.
