I am a primary school teacher. I have taught in Australia and the UK. in 2011, I started teaching in a remote indigenous community in Australia. The children in Lajamanu speak Warlpiri as their first language. The school aims to develop english while also giving significant consideration to Warlpiri culture. Warlpiri culture is strong so the school has an obligation to make it a large part of the learning. By including it in school plans we hope to encourage a culture of school attendance. School attendance is an ongoing challenge in remote indigenous communities.
