Nahla Valji is Policy Adviser and acting head of Peace and Security at UN Women, New York where she is responsible for UN Women’s work in the area of women, peace and security with a specific emphasis on conflict resolution, mediation and rule of law and transitional justice. She is the co-founder and former Managing Editor of the International Journal of Transitional Justice, published by Oxford University Press and is currently a co-editor on the Oxford Handbook on Gender and Conflict.

Prior to joining the UN, Nahla was Senior Project Manager in the Transitional Justice Programme at the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation in Cape Town, South Africa where she managed the African Transitional Justice Research Network; a network which focuses on building capacity amongst researchers and transitional justice activists on the African continent to inform, monitor and conduct advocacy concerning transitional justice policies in their countries.  She was also responsible for the Centre’s gender and transitional justice work and programming on transitional justice in Africa more generally.
