In 2000, Soulforce requested a meeting with the president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Upon denial, they initiated a direct action campaign with prayer vigils and rallies. In 2002, three volunteers used their knowledge of Canon Law to highlight inconsistencies in their treatment by the Church. Their passive resistance and subsequent arrest at the conference attracted widespread media coverage, demonstrating the influence of informed, strategic action.
